Chapter Seven

“Wait! Stop the car!” Dee’s sharp voice made Jeanette jerk the steering wheel. “Stop!”

“Shit.” Jean managed to hit the brakes on time. The wheels of her old pink beast shrieked, but it mercifully stopped. “Hey, what the hell was that all about?”

Dee was no longer on the passenger seat. She was sprinting out the car door and into the street. Jean ignored the horn behind her and unbuckled her seat belt hastily. They were in the middle of a highway. What was the other woman thinking?

Slamming her own car door shut, Jean immediately pressed her body against her car as a speeding car nearly ran over her. Jean gritted her teeth and angrily wove an emerald shield around her. While it wouldn’t exactly stop a speeding vehicle, it would warn her just in time to step away. When she spotted what Dee stopped for, her temper was at the end of her limits.

“We stopped in the middle of a busy highway for a dumb cat?” Jean walked up to the smaller woman and grabbed one of her shirtsleeves to pull her back into the car. The fat orange ball of fur in Dee’s arms mewled, its green eyes flickering with annoyance to Jean.

“We saved a life,” Dee only said, untangling herself from Jean’s grip.

With the large fur ball cat still in her arms, Dee began walking back to the car.

“We aren’t bringing that monster with us. I’m late for work as it is,” Jean pointed out, slamming the car door and buckling her seat belt again.

“Jean! Don’t call kitty a monster.” Dee furtively stroked the cat’s back.

The creature only gave a mewl of contentment and snuggled closer to her. What wouldn’t Jean give for Dee to stroke her like that?

Really, this is what I’m reduced to? Being jealous of a cat?

“That isn’t a kitty, it’s an oversized menace,” Jean muttered, beginning to start up the car again. It didn’t help her mood that the cars behind her kept blaring their horns. She pulled down her window to yell, “Why don’t you go drive ahead, asshole?”

“Geez, Jean.” Dee shook her head. “By the way, that’s his name. Kitty.”

“Are you kidding me? Dee, you’re not naming that thing. Naming it would only lead to unwanted attachment.”

When Dee only gave her a defiant, disapproving glare, Jean considered her options. It didn’t look like the other woman was going to easily let this one go. “Fine, I’ll make a quick drive to the animal shelter and we can dump—”

“I’m not dumping him in an animal shelter. I’m keeping him until he finds a new home.”

Dee threw her another insolent expression. An expression Jean knew would lead to a long–winded shouting argument where no one would win. Maybe just this once she would agree. Just this once so she wouldn’t have a damn headache. She needed her head screwed on tight to explain why she’d taken Dee’s case to her superior when she was advised to simply process and transfer her case to another officer.
